Private William Whitmore 4th (Queen's Own) Dragoon Guards

I am researching my 3xgreat-grandfather, William Whitmore of Reigate in Surrey, who was a private in the 4th (Queen's Own) Dragoons. He was captured on the 6th August 1809, presumably as a result of the Battle of Talavera, and was taken to the prison at Briancon. I had assumed that he stayed there until he was released and rejoined his regiment in July 1814. However, I have found something which refers to prisoners from Briancon being moved to Maubeuge in January 1814 but I have not been able to find much about this other prison.
I would be grateful for any information about this other prison and the movement of prisoners and also anything which would tell me how William might have made his way back to his regiment.
Many thanks

PS. I posted this on the Peninsular War 1912-1814 page but think this is a better fit for my query.
