why could Ewart not have come across a lancer from Jaquinot's division as they were in the valley and Ewart could have taken it down in the valley rather than just after the hedges...also as he was in the 5th troop he would have been on the nearest side to wear the French cavalry were coming from...quite plausible, yes with a bit of help he may or may not have realized helped him :)

At the moment the best answer is that Ewart's account is a condencesd version of his entire experience, which must in reality have been stretched over the entire charge. The lancer can be explained with a little probing. As you say he was probably from Jaquinot's division.
