Captain James Poole, Scots Greys, oak and metal bound campaign trunk, early 19th Century, with Barrons Patent lock with GR cipher, carrying handles to the sides, width 92cm, height 61cm, depth 56cm Appointed Captain on 25th May 1803, James Poole distinguished himself at the Battle of Waterloo, sustaining many injuries including a head wound which later caused derangement of the mind, for which he took opium. He retired from the Scots Greys in 1817 on account of his mental illness. He died at the young age of 31, the opium paradoxically having proved fatal.
