Perhaps another battle that often escapes the attention of many Napoleonic historians is that of the Eckmühl fought on 21st/22nd April 1809 during the War of the Fifth Coalition. The battle ended in French victory over the Austrians albeit not the decisive win Napoleon would have hoped for. The French suffered some 6,000 casualties compared to Austria's 12,000. For more information on the battle please see this Wikipedia article.

Can any members suggest further reading on this battle?

Sorry. My Austrian expertise is rather limited to some books with chapters on Wagram and Aspern Essling and the osprey book. But I know that Osprey used to have a book about Eckmuhl I'm pretty sure it's out of print now though.

There does not appear to be much on the battle (nor the War of the Fifth Coalition in general) in book form. Perhaps a gap in the market for a budding author?

I highly recommend "Thunder on the Danube Vol 1" by John H. Gill. The three volume account is an intense study of the 1809 campaign and Volume 1 covers the Bavarian action in detail, including Eckmuehl. Good maps and OOB for the armies taking part.

I keep meaning to buy Thunder on the Danube as it has had some positive comments from forum members in the past.

You mention volume 1 - how many volumes are there?
