The Napoleonic Wars 1792-1815

Battle of Montereau, 18th February 1814

For all discussions relating to the coalition campaign of 1812-1814 that led to the defeat of France and Napoleon's exile to Elba.

Battle of Montereau, 18th February 1814

Postby Mark » February 18th, 2014, 11:58 am

Perhaps better known than the Battle of Mormans I posted about yesterday today is the anniversary of the Battle of Montereau fought on this day in 1814. The battle ended in French victory for Napoleon over the Austrians during the War of the Sixth Coalition: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Montereau

Can any member suggest a particularly good book on this aspect of the Napoleonic Wars?

Mark,

Most interesting! I had wondered about campaigning in winter, when they all should have been snug in quarters, but now I understand the reasons for it. Napoleonland -must plan to visit!

All the best,

I haven't heard anything about Napoleon land since early 2012. Hopefully they have dropped the mad idea!

If you are restricted to English I strongly recommend F Lorraine Petre's Napoleon at Bay 1814. More recent is Andrew Uffindell's Napoleon 1814; although rather thin on detail of the battles. But if you want something more detailed (and pricey!!) and really well illustrated try F-G Hourtelle's 1814, The Campaign for France.

I did two articles in First Empire on Montereau; more detail on request.
