End of French occupation of Saarland, 1814

For all discussions relating to the coalition campaign of 1812-1814 that led to the defeat of France and Napoleon's exile to Elba.

End of French occupation of Saarland, 1814

This plaque is on the facade of a venerable house in the centre of the German town of Sankt Wendel, north of Saarbrücken. This text translates: Prince Wilhelm of Prussia, the future king and emperor stayed in this house 6 and 7 January 1814. From here, Field Marshal von Blücher proclaimed to the inhabitants of the Saarland that foreign domination had ended and the connection with the right bank of the Rhine had been restored.

I know very little of the stuff that went on in Northern Europe.....I guess that, Walcheren aside, most of the focus for British forces was in the Peninsular, Med and West & East Indies....

I'm hoping Germans and Austrians will join the forum to balance things a bit.

If you're interested in learning about the Eastern theatre, I can recommend Russia Against Napoleon: The Battle for Europe, 1807 to 1814 by Dominic Lieven. If you need further prompting: http://www.literaryreview.co.uk/esdaile_10_09.htm

The 1812-1814 events there certainly helped Wellington and the Anglo-Portuguese army.

Hello Sarah,
With this commemorative plate showed, can you inform me with the address where the plate can to be seen ?
I will add to the "Guide Napoléon".
Thank you very much.
All the best.

Hello Alain,

The plaque is on the wall of a well preserved old home that now has an ice cream shop on the ground floor. It's in the centre of the German town of Sankt Wendel, north of Saarbrücken. It's near the Schlossplatz, perhaps on the Schlossstrasse. If/when I'm back there, I'll note the address & GPS and tell you.

I tried to locate it on Google Earth but Germany doesn't allow the filming of 'street views'.
