Elvas in 20 minutes!

Postby ctrunfree » April 15th, 2017, 10:06 am

Hi fellow enthusiasts

We're getting a bus from Evora to Elvas in a fortnights time, with the intention of then getting a taxi from the bus stop to Badajoz.

I was wondering if anyone who knows the layout would be able to comment on the feasibility of getting a taxi to first take us up to the English Cemetery for a quick look before heading onto Badajoz where we are staying for a few nights. Are there any other Peninsular War 'must sees' that we could poke our noses into during our flying visit?

We speak practically no Portuguese or Spanish unfortunately, which might make such a plan a bit impractical.

Depending on how much time you have, you can walk from the Elvas bus stop into town, to the main square in front of the Cathedral. The tourist office is there, where you can get a clear map of how to walk from there to the British Cemetery. The Cemetery is open and, with luck, the custodian will be there with a key to the museum in the chapel beside the Cemetery.

Take a look at http://british-cemetery-elvas.org/ and click on Panorama on the right at the top to see and/or click on Cemetery on the home page to get good pictures of the memorial plaques along the Albuera and Badajoz walls. The known graves are within the wrought iron fence.

You should be able to get a bus to Badajoz from the bus station where you stopped when you first entered Elvas. If you prefer a taxi, you should be able to find one at the bus station too. There's an excellent museum near the castle in Badajoz, with a diorama of the last Siege of Badajoz. The tourist office is near the main square. http://british-cemetery-elvas.org/badajoz.html

Enjoy your visit,

Thanks Sarah

We will have a couple of roller suitcases with us so I don't think we'll be able to get up to the Cemetery by foot. We're travelling on a public holiday (1 May) so unfortunately taxi is the only option. We'll definitely be having a look at the Badajoz museum, and hopefully getting out to the Albuera battlefield.

Nothing's very far in Elvas. I think you could do get to the Cemetery with your suitcases. Or check your cases at the Elvas bus station, if that's possible.

Albuera is a distance from Badajoz and the main battlefield is outside the village. It would be handy if you could rent a car for the day. Have a good map with you. Andy's description of the battlefield is excellent. viewtopic.php?f=41&t=3619

Thanks Sarah

We are currently checking out options to get a driver to take us to Albuera. I'll post on that other link about the battlefield itself.
