33rd Regiment of Foot

Postby Genie1957 » January 10th, 2018, 12:54 am

Hi,
I came across this forum whilst researching my great x 4 grandmother's brother - William Dent, born 1788 in Marrick, Yorkshire who enlisted into the 33rd Regiment of Foot on the 3rd May 1811 aged 22 for limited service and was wounded in The Battle of Waterloo (UK, Waterloo Medal Roll 1815). I believe he served for at least 12 years. In 1818, he was re-enlisted for unlimited service and had at some time been promoted to Serjeant then reduced to Corporal. The latest date on the record is 1823.

Above him on the Canada, British Regimental Register of Service, 1756-1900, is a John Shaw from Masham, Yorkshire who was discharged 5 years after enlisting after contracting cholera aged 26. I have traced him on the census records, where he is recorded as a Chelsea Pensioner, until his death and I believe that he and William were possibly related or friends.

I am trying to find out what happened to William as he just seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth and hopefully discover a connection with him and John.

Strangely, his brother was the same problem and it turned out that he was transported to Australia.

I am hoping that someone could please give me some advice about tracing further records for him. :?:

Genie- greetings,

The Muster Rolls of the 33rd will record your man's presence in the ranks of the regiment until he was discharged, invalided out, or died, if that was the case (the regiment did not see active service again until the Crimean War).

From 1822, the 33rd were in Jamaica, where they remained for 10 years, returning to Britain in 1832, by which time your man, aged about 43, would have been a fairly old soldier (but perhaps an experienced, valued NCO- depending on how many demerits he clocked up!). Jamaica was a notoriously unhealthy posting in those days, so it is possible he died out there or was invalided out, his constituion having been broken down due to sickness or the rigours of the climate. Does the evidence point to his service ending around 1823?

Regimental muster rolls were completed twice a year in June and December. The bound volumes for each regiment are kept at the National Archives at Kew, in south west London. They consist of several massive tomes and unfortunately can only be examined on site, so that would necessitates a personal visit on your part, or the services of a researcher if it is not possible for you to visit.

This link leads to an archives site with a summary of the regiment's postings and service:
http://web.archive.org/web/200801311935 ... /033-1.htm

You mention Canada. Do you have a particular interest in that part of the world? As you may well know already, the 33rd Regiment served there briefly from 1843-1848, just before the Crimean War. By that time William Dent would have been a veteran member of the regiment. Are you wondering if he took his discharge there? At that date we would have strayed well into the remit of NWF's sister forum, Victorian Wars Forum:
http://www.victorianwars.com/index.php

I hope some of that is helpful.

Thanks so much for the warm welcome to this site with a special thanks to jf42. This was exactly the kind of advice I was hoping to get regarding movements of the regiment etc.
I only have 2 records at the moment - the Medal Roll which confirms he was wounded and the Canada Regimental Service Record. Apparently this does not necessarily mean a person served in Canada bit some may have.
1823 is the last date on the Regimental Register but I expect he served beyond that.
Thanks for the Jamaica connection. I am anticipating a long search for him.
Regards Genie.

Hi Genie,

Have had a look at the Musters for 1st Battalion 33rd Regiment, covering 1814 & 1815, which are on Ancestry. They show him as a Corporal throughout that period. Following are the Muster locations, by dates (location being at the end of the Muster Quarter) and which Company William was serving in. You will see that he was in Captain Longden’s No 10 Company at Waterloo :

Calmptout (Holland) 25 Dec 1813 - 24 Mar 1814 (9 Coy)
Antwerp 25 Mar - 24 Jun 1814 (10 Coy)
Tournay 25 Jun - 24 Sep 1814 (9 Coy)
Menin 25 Sep - 24 Dec 1814 (9 Coy)
Courtray 25 Dec 1814 - 24 Mar 1815 (10 Coy)
Camp, Bois de Boulogne 25 Mar - 24 Jun 1815 (10 Coy)
Camp, Bois de Boulogne 25 Jun - 24 Sep 1815 (7 Coy) Sick in Regimental Hospital during 3rd Muster period (25 Aug - 24 Sep)
Sunderland (UK) 25 Sep - 24 Dec 1815 (7 Coy)

The Musters also contain the Supplementary Pay List, for those present at Waterloo, showing his service 2nd May 1811 - 24th Dec 1815.

You may already have all that info, but better give it than not. I have pictures of the Muster for William covering the Waterloo period. PM me if you would like copies.

Will keep you posted if I manage to uncover his path after Waterloo...

Hi Owen,
Thank you so much for taking the trouble to find that informaiton for me. I am truly grateful. I have Ancestry but haven't come across that record covering 1814-1815. I have 3 records from Ancestry - Canada, British Regimental Register of Service, 1756-1900, UK, British Army Muster Books and Pay Lists 1812-1817 which shows the Camp, Bois de Boulgone and UK, Waterloo Medal Rolls 1818. I also have a pdf copy of the Waterloo Roll Call from The Library of Toronto. However, it only shows information for the higher ranks.

How can I find that record? How did I miss it? How do I send a private message as I would appreciate any copies you can find providing it is not too much trouble.

I was born in Sunderland!

Regards Julie

No worries Genie, am in the process of sending them to your email address (got your PM!). As you are on Ancestry, you can find them from this link...you can trawl backwards and forwards through the Musters from here. Any problems, just shout.
