Hi guys, I recently discovered an online copy of the memoirs of John Shipp - he was twice promoted from the ranks and had an extraordinary career - mainly in India fighting the Marathas and the Gurkhas. I've written a blog post that you may find interesting http://www.caparkinson.com/post/130816458661/upfromtheranks

Among other fascinating details is the ad-hoc British mounted riflemen in the Cape whose composition and uniform he mentions.

Does any other information exist about it?
I'm guessing the rifles used were taken from colonial Dutch sources.
