South Shields Volunteer army

Hi I have traced a relative of mine who set up the South Shields Volunteer army. Do you know the best place to find any records. I've found some newspaper cuttings of the time but I'd love something more. I'm really keen to try and find some kind of painting/drawing if that's at all likely.?
