Help promoting the forum - suggestions?

Postby Mark » July 17th, 2011, 1:32 pm

Hi All

Since launching the forum some weeks ago we have actively attempted to promote the forum by bringing it to the attention of academics and authors who are interested in the period, by contacting web sites concerned with the period to create a links exchange and by contacting Napoleonic re-enactment units. It took our sister-forum (the Victorian Wars Forum) about 12 months to get going so it is not a quick process. However, I am open to suggestion as how to attempt to speed this process up and thought I'd throw it open to members for suggestions.

So what would you guys suggest?

Hi Steve

Thanks for the suggestion, I like the idea. I have checked Medal News but they charge quite a substantial sum for adverts but I will have a look at other magazines.

if you are a subscriber to Medal News you get a classified ad free for 3 months at a time. I use my mine all the time for the research I do.

Ah, I never renewed by subscription  Having just pre-ordered the new Medal Year Book from Phil I think I will take a new subscription to their magazine.

The more activity on the forum that include key words, i.e. Trafalgar, Waterloo, Peninsular War, and related subject matter regarding the particular content, in this case the Napoleonic Wars, the higher the hit and visit factor and the higher up the que you move. This is especially true with Yahoo and Google.

Cheers Connaught, you are quite correct. I guess we need to post more content and generate more search engine interest. Mind you, your fantastic posts are certainly helping us there so thank you :)

The very least I can do. I'd really enjoy seeing some good discussion on the Napoleonic Wars.

I do appreciate that the forum needs to be seen and used by a wider audience. I also would like to see more discussion and input but I don't think the way to go is by cutting and pasting content from other web-sites. I think that if interesting articles are found on other sites adding a link to the site in the relevant section is better.

Has anyone written an article themselves or have conducted research into any aspect of the Napoleonic Wars? If so perhaps you may be willing to publish it or your findings on the forum?

As to posting content 'copied and pasted' on to the forum we must be mindful of copyright. Please ensure permission is gained from the site owner/author before doing so or otherwise a link in the 'Useful Links' section is the best option.
