Bicentennial commemoration of the Bayonne Sortie

Postby FBC-Elvas, Portugal » April 14th, 2014, 3:43 pm

The Sortie from the Bayonne citadel occurred today, 200 years ago. It was commemorated in the Coldstream Guards cemetery where a plaque was unveiled and another British plaque was unveiled at the St. Etienne Church where Major General Andrew Hay was killed. Flowers and a poppy wreath were laid at the French monument to Marshal Soult. It was a memorable day.

We did Andy. The weather was fine although overcast and all the events were well attended by both civilians and military. The General in charge of the citadel was most charming but still wouldn't let visit. Paris decides who gets past the guards. It's still an important military site.

Thank you very much.
I see that the eagle has been reguilded.

Could you tell me what is written on the plaque on the St-Etienne Church?

The Bayonne 1814 on the two plaques with Peninsular War 200 is the very able Bayonne historical group that was invaluable in the organisation of the bicentennial weekend. Chapeau.

The full report of the bicentennial commemorations, with more pictures, is on http://peninsularwar200.org/2014bayonne.pdf

Dominque, if you want non-resized copies of any of the photos, let me know.
